Washington, June 7, SPA -- The White House on Tuesday welcomed the call by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to hold a referendum. “Abbas has demonstrated that he’s somebody who wants to work toward a two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, spokesman Tony Snow told reporters traveling with President George W. Bush. “I think it’s important for Palestinians to wrestle with the issue of whether they want to have a two-state solution.” Snow would not predict the outcome of the referendum. “We’re just going to have to wait and see what happens, whether he’s able to have a referendum and what happens.” The document at the center of the referendum calls for a national unity government, an end to attacks in Israel, and the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel on land conquered by Israel in 1967. --SPA 07/06/2006 11:53 ت م www.spa.gov.sa/366893
