Former Afghan spy chief sentenced to death for mass killings

Kabul, Feb 25, SPA -- An Afghan court on Saturdayfound a communist-era intelligence chief guilty of orderinghundreds of killings and sentenced him to death. Asadullah Sarwari, who headed the government's fearedintelligence department in 1978 under President NurMohammed Taraki, Afghanistan's first communist ruler, wascleared on a second charge of conspiracy against theIslamic government of Afghanistan. The court heard testimony Saturday from more than 20witnesses and saw video footage of documents, allegedlysigned by Sarwari, in which he ordered the killings, the Associated Press reported.
