government Manila - Communist rebels have scrapped peace talks with the government of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who has been battling resignation calls over vote-rigging allegations, dpa quoted a guerrilla negotiator as saying Thursday. Luis Jalandoni, chief rebel negotiator, said there was no use resuming stalled peace negotiations since the Arroyo government was not going to last very long. "The administration of President Arroyo is going down, so maybe the next administration will be in a better position to attend to the peace process," he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper from his base in Utrecht, the Netherlands. "There can be no meaningful peace talks with this administration," he added. "After this administration is replaced, then we can iron out the kinks in the peace talks," said Jalandoni, who has been living in exile in Utrecht since the mid-1980s. Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the government would no longer exert extra effort to woo the rebels back to the negotiating table and instead intensify military operations against the guerrillas. "The armed forces will have to go after them especially now that they have made an announcement that they are pulling out of the peace talks," he said. Ermita added that the government would likely suspend a joint agreement on security and immunity guarantees (JASIG), which granted immunity from arrest to ranking rebel leaders while the peace negotiations were ongoing. "I suppose we will make an appropriate announcement on when we will suspend the JASIG," he said. --more 1312 Local Time 1012 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/278243
