Damascus, Sept 12, SPA -- Chief U.N. investigator Detlev Mehlis held talks in Syria on Monday, moving into a sensitive phase his probe into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri earlier this year. Syria agreed to the visit by the German prosecutor after international accusations of not cooperating with the probe, which began in mid-June, Reuters reported. A Syrian source close to the talks in Damascus said Mehlis wanted to interview at least 8 Syrian officials, including top officers, who were serving in Lebanon at the time of the murder, and other senior figures. He was engaged in discussions with officials in the Syrian capital on the procedures for the investigations in Syria. --SPA 1348 Local Time 1048 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/289041
