after opponents disqualified Singapore, Aug 13, SPA -- Singapore's president, whose job islargely ceremonial, will serve a second term withoutrunning for re-election because the eligibilityapplications of three aspiring candidates were rejected, AP reported. President S.R. Nathan, 81, was awarded a certificate ofeligibility to run for a second term, but the PresidentialElections Committee said Saturday that it had rejectedthree other applications, saying the would-be candidateswere not qualified. The most prominent was Andrew Kuan, a former chieffinancial officer of Jurong Town Corporation, an industrialdeveloper in Singapore. Kuan is a member of the rulingPeople's Action Party, which has dominated politics in thecity-state for decades and is expected to trounce a weakopposition in the next election. A presidential election had been expected late this month,but Nathan will instead continue in the job. Nathan, theformer head of intelligence, had been widely considered ashoo-in despite health problems, including heart disease.
