Thousands of Indonesians demand U.S. pull out of Iraq, Afghanistan

Jakarta, Indonesia, March 5, SPA -- Thousands of Muslims rallied infront of the tightly guarded U.S. Embassy in Indonesia onSunday, demanding American troops leave Iraq andAfghanistan. The protesters, many of whom were from the groupHizbut Tharir, were kept well away from the mission, whichis ringed by two concrete walls and barbed wire. Some 2,000police stood watch and two water cannons stood by, but therally ended peacefully, the Associated Press reported. "Out of Iraq," the protesters chanted, gathering forhours under the blazing sun in the capital, Jakarta. Meanwhile, U.S. Embassy spokesman Max Kwak thanked Indonesian policefor helping maintain order and said he respected the rightof Indonesians to freedom of speech and assembly, "two ofthe pillars of democracy."
