New York, Feb 9, SPA -- The United States said Wednesday it would continue its diplomatic initiative to resolve the Eritrea-Ethiopia border dispute despite Eritrea's lack of cooperation. John Bolton, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and president of the Security Council for the month, said he received agreement from other council members for extending the U.S. mediation efforts. In January, Bolton asked the Security Council to delay a decision on the future status of the troubled U.N. mission in Eritrea-Ethiopia (UNMEE) pending a mission to the region by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Frazer. But Eritrea would not receive the senior U.S. diplomat, who instead traveled only to Ethiopia last month in an effort to mediate the border demarcation dispute between the two Horn of Africa rivals. Eritrea has warned that war could resume with its larger neighbor because of Ethiopia's refusal to accept a three-year-old border demarcation that both nations agree to respect as part of the 2000 Algiers peace deal that ended their conflict. Bolton said efforts are underway to arrange a meeting of witnesses to the Algiers accord, followed by further meetings of the Eritrea-Ethiopia boundary commission.--SPA 14 01 Local Time 11 01 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/329168
