London, Nov 30, SPA -- Britain has sent a letter to the U.S. government on behalf of the European Union (E.U.) asking it formally to clarify claims over CIA flights allegedly carrying detainees to secret jails in eastern Europe, dpa reported. The Foreign Office Wednesday confirmed the letter had been sent, but added that it had no evidence of the use of British territory in such operations by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Human rights campaign groups have claimed that at least 12 airports in England and Scotland were used by the CIA planes as stopovers for refueling. Human rights group Liberty has threatened legal action against Britain's police whom it said could be guilty of "aiding and abetting kidnap and torture". The group has said that legal action against the government was also being considered. Labor MP Chris Mullin told the BBC Wednesday he had no evidence that the U.K. had been "complicit". He added, however: "There's no doubt that the Americans have for some time been franchising out torture to countries that are rather less scrupulous than ourselves, and indeed the Americans, about the use of torture". --SPA 1409 Local Time 1109 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/306717
