US group, Kazakh officials announce project to eliminate weapons-grade nuclear fuel

UST-KAMENOGORSK, Kazakhstan, Oct 8, SPA -- A U.S.-basednonproliferation group and Kazakh officials on Saturdayunveiled a project to eliminate nearly 3 metric tons (3.3short tons) of weapons-grade nuclear fuel that could beused to make some two dozen atomic bombs. The US$2 million (¤1.65 million) project is part ofnonproliferation efforts. It was initiated by the Nuclear Threat Initiative, aU.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing thethreat of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Thegroup and the Kazakh nuclear industry shared the costs. NTI co-founder Ted Turner used the announcement ceremonyto urge the United States and Russia "to reduce theirnuclear weapons as much as possible."
