Baghdad, Sept 4, SPA -- The Iraqi government announced Sundaythat the trial of Saddam Hussein will open on October 19. "The first session for the trial will begin on Oct. 19," government spokesman Laith Kubba told reporters. He was quoted as saying by The Associated Press that seven co-defendants from the former regime would face trial with him. Saddam is expected to face about a dozen trials foralleged crimes committed by his regime, including thegassing of Kurds in Halabja and the 1991 suppression of aShiite uprising in the south. "The charges against Saddam are so many (and) regardlessof how many years he is going to live, the charges andtrials would not end," Kubba said.
