Russia, China, India agree on cooperation against terrorism

Vladivostok, Russia, June 2, SPA -- The Russian, Chinese and Indianforeign ministers agreed Thursday to intensify joint workagainst terrorism and other threats and underlined theircommon approach to international affairs. The trio met in Russia's Pacific port of Vladivostok, nearthe Chinese border, a venue underlining Russia's place inAsia. "We are cultivating practical cooperation between thethree states in the struggle against new threats andchallenges, first of all, international terrorism,drug-trafficking and other forms of organized crime,"Lavrov told a news conference following his talks withChinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Indian ExternalAffairs Minister K. Natwar Singh. The ministers also discussed ways to strengthen politicaland economic cooperation. Lavrov said priority areasinclude transport, energy, agriculture and high technology,and that the three ministers had discussed intensifiedcooperation on preventing and responding to naturaldisasters. Singh said business executives from the three countrieswould meet in New Delhi next year. "We have also discussed problems of United Nationsreform, including reform of the Security Council," he wasquoted as saying by the ITAR-Tass news agency _ a referenceto the quest by India, Brazil, Germany and Japan to expandthe Security Council and hopefully win permanent seats. Singh thanked Russia for supporting its bid for apermanent seat, ITAR-Tass said. Lavrov and Li used the occasion of the meeting to exchangedocuments on the recently ratified Chinese-Russian borderagreement. "Our countries are establishing strategic cooperation butit is not aimed against any other country," Li saidthrough a translator.
