Kampala, July 30, SPA -- Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni won an overwhelming victory on Saturday in a referendum he promoted to end the single-party politics he imposed on the east African state 19 years ago. "We declare that the people of the Republic of Uganda have chosen a multi-party political system henceforth," said Badru Kiggundu, chairman of Uganda's Electoral Commission. Reuters quoted Kiggundu as saying that full results from 99.6 percent of polling stations showed 92.5 percent of voters heeded the president's call for a "yes" vote lifting the political restrictions. He said 47 percent of Uganda's 8.5 million registered voters cast ballots. "This is the factual position of the Commission and we will defend it anywhere," Kiggundu told a news conference. --SPA 1424 Local Time 1124 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/279972
