Sharm-EL-Sheikh Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit interjected toassure Condoleezza Rice the vote would be open. "Who would object to fair and transparent elections?"Gheit said. "It will be so, I assure you." Gheit said he told Rice the allegations of mistreatment ofthe holy Quran and abuse of prisoners by American troops at theAbu Ghraib prison in Iraq resonated strongly in the Arabworld. "I told you also that there is anger in the region andthat we have to work on this anger," Gheit said at thenews conference, looking directly at Rice. Earlier, Rice asked Arab countries to help thwart violenceas Israelis undergo a complex withdrawal from the GazaStrip, and argued that the whole Middle East will benefitfrom greater political freedom. "I think they will work to coordinate and make this asuccess," Rice said of the Israelis and Palestinians.
