China's foreign minister rejects Japanese demand for apology over violent protests

Beijing, April 17, SPA -- China's foreign minister on Sunday rejectedTokyo's demand for an apology for damage to Japanesediplomatic missions in violent protests, telling hisJapanese counterpart that Beijing had never done anythingfor which it had to apologize to Japan's people. Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing instead complained that Japanhas "hurt the feelings" of Chinese on a series of issues,including relations with rival Taiwan and "the subject ofhistory." "The Chinese government has never done anything for whichit has to apologize to the Japanese people," Li toldJapanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura. Machimura was in Beijing to deliver a protest followingthree weekends of violent anti-Japanese protests.
