Baghdad, June 5, SPA -- Saddam Hussein could face up to 500charges, but he will be tried on only 12 "thoroughlydocumented" counts because prosecuting him on all would bea "waste of time," the prime minister's spokesman saidSunday. Laith Kuba also said Saddam was likely to be tried withinthe next two months on a range of charges, includingalleged crimes committed in Iraqi Kurdistan. "There should be no objection that a trial should takeplace within that time frame," Kuba said during a pressconference. "It is the government's view that the trial ofSaddam should take place as soon as possible," Kuba was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. No date has been set for the trial of Saddam, who is beingheld in a U.S.-run detention facility in Baghdad sincebeing captured in December 2003. Kuba said investigating judges believe Saddam will beconvicted on 12 "thoroughly documented" charges and couldface up to 500 counts, but trying him on all would be a"waste of time." "The number of charges on which he will be tried are 12and the judges are confidant that he will be convicted ofthese charges," Kuba said.--SPA1157 Local Time 0857 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/267534
