spokesman Bishkek, March 11, SPA -- Kyrgyzstan's President AskarAkayev may call a referendum to confirm his powers andpossibly extend his term for another five years if theopposition continues to demand early presidentialelections, a spokesman warned on Friday. "The opposition might force the president to call areferendum asking citizens to confirm his powers,"presidential spokesman Abdil Seghizbayev told reporters."Do they want another five years for the president?" Akayev's term expires in October and he has publiclypledged to step down to abide by the constitution that barshim from seeking a third consecutive term.
