Indonesia begins second round of troop withdrawal from Aceh

Lhokseumawe, Oct 18, SPA -- Indonesia withdrew more than2,100 more troops from Aceh on Tuesday and rebels completedtheir second round of weapons decommissioning, both sidesmoving quickly to implement a peace agreement to end one ofAsia's longest running wars. Dozens of locals turned up at Lhokseumawe port in northAceh to wave the soldiers off. The head of the EU-led monitoring mission overseeing thepeace accord, which was signed two months ago in Finland,was also present. "Hopefully, this can really lead to an eternal peacehere," said one marine, Lt. Col. I Ketut Suwarya. The 2,163 soldiers who left Tuesday were the first batchof some 6,000 troops slated to be pulled out this week.
