Bush says EU, U.S., must work together to get rid of agricultural subsidies

Gleneagles, Scotland, July 7, SPA -- U.S. President George W. Bushsaid on Thursday that the European Union and the UnitedStates should work together to get rid of agriculturalsubsidies, AP reported. "It is very important for the world to hear very clearlythe position of the United States," Bush said after abreakfast meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blairahead of the first talks between world leaders at the G-8summit. "We want to work with the EU to rid our respectivecountries of agricultural subsidies. The best place to dothat is the Doha round," he said, referring to the roundof trade talks that began in the Qatari capital in 2001."I would hope that by 2010 the Doha round will achievethat objective." Blair has been pressing the EU to cut its massiveagricultural subsidies and has said he will urge G-8leaders at the summit to do the same.
