South Africa's former deputy president indicted in corruption scandal

DURBAN, South Africa, Nov 12, SPA -- Dismissed Deputy PresidentJacob Zuma, was formally indicted Saturday on corruption charges involving hisfinancial adviser and two French arms companies. Zuma, who retains huge support among the rank and file ofthe African National Congress, made his third courtappearance in a scandal that has divided the governingparty and thrown open the question of who will succeedPresident Thabo Mbeki. He has repeatedly protested hisinnocence and made clear he still has his sights on the topjob, according to a report of The Associated Press. The former freedom fighter with no formal education willgo on trial in the Durban High Court on July 31. The trial,the most politically explosive in post-apartheid SouthAfrica, is scheduled to last until mid-November. Top ANC and parliamentary officials were present in theDurban Magistrates Court as several thousand supportersdemonstrated outside Saturday, waving flags, blowingtrumpets, dancing and singing protest songs from theapartheid era. Police with sniffer dogs cordoned off thecourt and blocked surrounding streets as a helicopterhovered overhead. Zuma's appearance lasted less than five minutes.
