Berlin, July 18, SPA -- U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen.Richard Myers said Monday that the recent wave of suicidebombings in Iraq won't derail the country's progress towarddemocracy but warned of more violence ahead. "Every major milestone has been met. That will continue,in my belief, to happen," Myers told reporters during avisit to Berlin. He said a draft constitution should be completed thismonth, clearing the way for a referendum on the document inOctober and elections in December. "I think the situation_ security, political, economic _ will allow that tohappen," he said. "Clearly, there's going to be more violence ahead becausethere are people who don't want that to happen," he was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. "As history has shown, they are on the losing side, andthey will lose here because we have a very strong coalitionand we have very strong Iraqis who want their country to befree." He drew a comparison to the American colonies' struggle tobreak away from England, saying that independence wasdeclared on July 4, 1776, "and yet we fought for sevenmore years."--SPA1414 Local Time 1114 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/277582
