Kabul, June 1, SPA -- An explosion inside a mosque in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar killed at least 14 people and wounded about 40 others during a funeral for a pro-government cleric on Wednesday, according to Nic Downie, head of the Afghanistan NGO security office. The death toll is expected to rise, Downie said. The funeral was for Mullah Abdullah Fayaz, a top cleric for southern Afghanistan who was assassinated on May 29 and who was a supporter of the Karzai government. Security officials said the attack was the result of a suicide bomber. The attack came as mourners had gathered at the mosque to offer condolences for the cleric. "Many people have been killed and wounded," a police official said, according to a Reuters news report. There has been no immediate claim for responsibility.--SPA1110 Local Time 0810 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/266639
