Germany calls for end to Iran's isolation, incentives to end nuclear ambitions

Munich, Germany, Feb 12, SPA -- Germany appealed Saturday for theUnited States to join Europe in ending the isolation ofIran, saying economic and security incentives were neededto persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear ambitions. "I strongly encourage the U.S. administration to activelysupport the Europeans' diplomatic efforts," German DefenseMinister Peter Struck told a security conference. "We must overcome Iran's massive isolation, for Iran willonly abandon its nuclear ambitions for good if not only itseconomic but also its legitimate security interests aresafeguarded." The speech was drafted for German Chancellor GerhardSchroeder, but was delivered by Struck after flu forced theSchroeder to drop out of the annual conference. Germany, France and Britain are leading Europeandiplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to drop activities thatcould be used to develop nuclear weapons.
