Al-Quds city, Feb 1, SPA -- Israel is going to slow its planned pullout from five West Bank towns after a day of violencestrained an informal cease-fire, and will stop the processaltogether if Palestinians don't halt all attacks onIsraeli targets, Israeli security officials said Tuesday. Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told Palestiniannegotiator Mohammed Dahlan that Israel would withdraw fromone city at a time rather than from all five at once, apparently beginning with Ramallah, the seat of thePalestinian government, the officials said, speaking oncondition of anonymity. The pullout might begin within the next few days, but notnecessarily before Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon andthe new Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, hold their firstmeeting, they said. Israeli and Palestinian officials areto meet Thursday to put together the agenda for theAbbas-Sharon session, which is expected to take placearound Feb. 8. Palestinians objected to the new Israeli position on theWest Bank handover. "We will not tell them to stop if they are withdrawingfrom Ramallah, but we want them to implement the previousunderstandings, the withdrawal from five cities," a seniorPalestinian official said Tuesday, speaking on condition ofanonymity.--SPA1338 Local Time 1038 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/236046
