Belgrade, April 7, SPA -- EU foreign policy envoyJavier Solana arrived in Belgrade Thursday for talks withSerbian and Montenegrin leaders on ways to step up effortsto bring the Balkan country closer to joining the Europeanbloc. Solana met Svetozar Marovic, president of theSerbia-Montenegro union, and was later to meet thepresidents and prime ministers of the two republics. He is expected to press Belgrade to extradite major warcrimes suspects. Belgrade has been reluctant to arrest suspects sought bythe U.N. war crimes tribunal at The Hague, Netherlands, fearing political backlash from nationalists loyal toformer President Slobodan Milosevic and has preferred thatthey surrender voluntarily. The European Union has repeatedly warned Belgrade itsmembership prospects hinge on full cooperation with TheHague court. Twelve suspects have given themselves up since October, but major players, such as Bosnian Serb wartime commanderGen. Ratko Mladic, remain at large.--SPA1332 Local Time 1032 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/252818
