Ankara, Turkey, Sept 26, SPA -- Parliament met Sunday in anemergency session to take up an urgent package of reformsaimed at boosting the country's chances of startingmembership talks with the European Union. The government took the unusual step of calling parliamentto session on a Sunday to quickly pass the penal codereform package in time for an October 6 EU progress reportthat will assess if Turkey is ready to start accessionnegotiations with the bloc. Both the government andopposition parties support the measures. Parliament opened its session Sunday morning but adjournedafter a brief debate until 1300 (1000 GMT) to give time tothe justice commission to reintroduce the package toparliament, a largely technical procedure.
