Khartoum, Sept 25, SPA -- Sudanese authorities accused anopposition party Saturday of plotting to abduct and killmore than three dozen senior government officials and blowup key sites in the capital, where the army was out inforce. Two army officers and an unspecified number of privatesalso were arrested for cooperating with plotters of a coupattempt that was to begin unfolding at 2 p.m. Friday,according to the government's Sudan Media Center. "The officers, whose mission was to leak as much weaponsand ammunition to the plotters as possible, wereimmediately arrested," according to the agency. Heavily armed soldiers and military police were posted atintersections throughout the capital Saturday and aroundmilitary and government installations. Pedestrians crossingbridges were questioned and subject to body searches. Inparts of the capital, soldiers crouched in newly dugtrenches, weapons in hand. The Media Center quoted Sudanese security authorities assaying the opposition Popular Congress Party, accused of atleast two separate coup plots this year, was behind thefoiled plot. It said the plotters intended to abduct and kill at least30 government leaders and blow up an unspecified number ofvital installations in Khartoum, the capital. It did notsay what sites allegedly were targeted. "The concerned security organs have arrested most of themain leaders and the grass-root participants in theplanning, coordination and implementation of the plot ...and the search is still going on for the leader of theoperation, Al-Hajj Adam Yusuf," the official agencyreported.--SPA1344 Local Time 1044 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/204815
