London, Feb 28, SPA -- Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said in aninterview published Monday that he believes peace withIsrael is possible but added that ending violence is amutual commitment. The interview was published in The Independent newspaperafter a weekend suicide bombing killed five Israelis at aTel Aviv nightspot and wounded dozens more. The Fridayattack was the first of its kind since Abbas took officeafter a Jan. 9 election. "We have an opportunity and it would be irresponsible ifwe, the Israelis, or the world allow it to slip away,"Abbas was quoted as saying in the interview conducted bye-mail. The Independent said the questions were submittedlast month, and the answers delivered Friday and Saturday. "We believe peace is possible now and we are ready tonegotiate with Israel to reach a true and lasting peacebased on justice and international legitimacy," Abbassaid. The interview appeared a day before Abbas was due to visitLondon for a conference on reforming the PalestinianAuthority. Tuesday's meeting is hosted by Prime Minister Tony Blairand will gather U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Riceand the U.N.
