The U.S. Southern Command in Miami assigned Army Brig.Gen. John T. Furlow to lead the investigation, which couldbegin as early as this week. The military maintains thatmost incidents detailed in the FBI memos occurred in 2002when the prison was just opening, and that some of theinterrogation techniques labeled as "aggressive" are nolonger in use. Documents published last month show FBI agents warned thegovernment about abuse and mistreatment when the firstprisoners arrived, more than a year before a scandal atIraq's Abu Ghraib prison. One letter, written by a seniorU.S. Justice Department official and obtained by TheAssociated Press, suggested the Pentagon failed to act onthe FBI complaints. "It will be fully investigated," Guantanamo's commandingArmy Brig. Gen. Jay Hood said Wednesday, adding that recentarticles about allegations have skewed the public'sunderstanding about the mission and the troops' commitmentto strict standards.--SPA1204 Local Time 0904 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/230401
