PUERTO ORDAZ, Venezuela, Mar. 29 , SPA -- Colombian President Alvaro Uribe appealed for international help in bringing peace to his country after 40 years of civil war Tuesday, telling the leaders of Venezuela, Brazil and Spain that the violence is too fierce to confront without their aid. The appeal came during a daylong summit aimed at deepeningpolitical alliances and coming up with common approaches toproblems from drug trafficking to poverty. Uribe spoke of the thousands killed and kidnapped eachyear, and said some 600 members of the security forces werewounded last year by land mines laid out by the biggestleftist rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces ofColombia. «We won't resolve a problem of that dimension without thehelp of our neighbors,» Uribe said during the talks at aretreat outside the eastern city of Puerto Ordaz. «We always try to help,» said Venezuelan President HugoChavez during the talks, which were closed to reportersthough parts were carried on state television.
