West Bank barrier Ramallah, West Bank, March 14, SPA -- U.N. Secretary-General KofiAnnan said Monday the United Nations is establishing aregister of property damage caused by Israel's West Bankseparation barrier, as hundreds of Palestinians protestedthe barrier outside the walled Palestinian governmentcompound where he spoke. Annan spoke to reporters after meeting with Palestinianleader Mahmoud Abbas. "We have also been asked to establish a register toregister damages and claims and that is going ahead," hesaid. "In fact I had a chance to discuss it this morningwith President Abbas. And we are establishing that registerto be able in time to help those with claims." Annan said the U.N. position on the barrier was clear,reflecting an anti-barrier resolution passed by the GeneralAssembly and an advisory opinion by the International Courtof Justice that found it to be illegal. As Annan spoke Palestinian policemen restrained hundredsof demonstrators at the main gate of the governmentcompound in Ramallah. The demonstrators carried signs reading "Resist the walluntil its collapse" and "Bring down the wall," andscuffled with policemen.
