over EU budget Paris, June 13, SPA -- France's foreign minister urged Britain toreach a compromise over the European Union's budget, sayingMonday that the EU doesn't need a financial "crisis" ontop of a political one. Keeping up pressure on Britain ahead of an EU summit thisweek, Philippe Douste-Blazy called for "an effort" fromLondon on the rebate it gets from the EU. The EU is «in crisis _ there's no use hiding it fromourselves,» Douste-Blazy said on RTL radio. "So we need acompromise." Britain is resisting pressure from the 24 other EU membersto give up the rebate worth billions of pounds(dollars/euros) each year. The rebate has been paid toBritain since 1984. France and others say that Britain'seconomic growth since then means it no longer needs themoney. "The British have to consider the circumstances in whichthey received their check in 1984. At the time there was aserious economic recession in Britain, and highunemployment. Today, growth is strong, unemployment is at4.5 percent," Douste-Blazy said in an interview with thenewspaper Le Figaro. --SPA1306 Local Time 1006 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/269519
