London, June 12, SPA -- Britain's Ministry of Defense said Sundaythat British troops had arrested a group of Iraqi insurgents suspected of carrying out separate roadside bomb attacks that killed two British soldiers. Troops from the military's Staffordshire regiment made thearrests during dawn raids early Sunday in Al Marjarr AlKabira, in southern Iraq, a Ministry of Defense spokesmansaid. The spokesman would not say exactly how many people hadbeen arrested, saying only that "less than five suspects"had been detained by troops who also recovered 130detonators and other bomb-making equipment. "Those targeted were suspected of being involved inrecent attacks that claimed the lives of two U.K. soldiers,Guardsman Wakefield and Lance Corporal Brackenbury, in May2005," the Associated Press quoted defense spokesman as saying anonymously. Anthony John Wakefield, 24, was killed in a blast in thesouthern Iraqi city of Al Amarah on May 2. Alan Brackenbury, 21, died from injuries suffered in aroadside bomb attack in the same region on May 29. Fourother British soldiers were injured in that blast. "The aim of the operation was to arrest a small number ofspecific suspects, all of whom are believed to be Iraqicitizens," the spokesman said.
