Tashkent, May 13, SPA -- Gunfire, explosions and a raid on a prison have hit the Uzbek city of Andijan, with news agencies reporting that nine people have been killed and 34 wounded. In the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, police shot and killed a man they mistakenly thought was a suicide bomber outside Israel's embassy, according to The Associated Press. Earlier, the U.S. Embassy said on its Web site that an attacker had been killed. It did not report any other casualties. In the eastern city of Andijan, clashes broke out after insurgents ambushed prison guards and opened the gates of the eastern city, freeing as many as 2,000 prisoners into the city's streets. The chaos broke out after thousands took to the streets to demand the release of 23 prominent businessmen. The accused say the charges are politically and economically motivated. President Islam Karimov is on his way to the city, and the foreign ministry says the situation is under control.--SPA1126 Local Time 0826 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/261951
