China steps up diplomatic efforts to persuade North Korea to return to nuclear talks

Beijing, Feb 20, SPA -- A top Chinese Communist Party official wasin the North Korean capital Sunday seeking a change ofheart after Pyongyang reportedly rejected any furthernegotiations over its nuclear weapons program. The head of the party's international department, WangJiarui, "exchanged views ... on international and regionalissues" with North Korea's No. 2 leader Kim Yong Nam,Chinese state media reported without elaborating. China is trying to draw North Korea back to six-nationtalks on its nuclear program _ a task that has taken ongreater urgency since Pyongyang's explosive but unconfirmeddeclaration earlier this month that it has become a nuclearpower. Wang, who arrived in Pyongyang Saturday for a four-dayvisit, also planned to meet with North Korean leader KimJong Il, according to South Korea's Munhwa Ilbo newspaper.
