Jordanian ambassador to Israel takes up post after four-year gap

Al-Quds city, Feb 20, SPA -- A new Jordanian ambassador took up hispost in Israel on Sunday, ending lower-level diplomatic relations during more than four years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Ambassador Marouf al-Bakhit, formerly Jordan's ambassadorto Turkey, flew to Israel on Sunday morning and wentstraight to his Tel Aviv office. His appointment was announced following a Feb. 8 Mideastsummit in Egypt, where Israel and the Palestinians pledgedto end violence between them, and Egypt and Jordan saidthey would once again post ambassadors to Israel. "It's a very welcome step and it's very important inenhancing the relationship between Israel and itsneighbors," Israeli Housing Minister Yitzhak Hertzog toldreporters at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.
