African Union expresses solidarity with tsunami victims =

Addis Ababa, Dec 31, SPA -- The African Union expressed solidarity Friday with the tsunami victims in the Indian Ocean basin while making a relief contribution of 100,000 dollars. The chairman of the A.U. Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare, said in a statement that he was "deeply shocked" by the disaster that killed more than 120,000 people Sunday. He expressed Africa's solidarity and sympathy over the tragedy as well as heartfelt condolences to bereaved families on behalf of the African Union and himself. "As a gesture of solidarity toward the affected populations, the African Union decided to make a symbolic contribution of 100,000 dollars," Konare added. He also commended the efforts of countries around the world "to alleviate the sufferings of the affected people".
