Baqouba, Iraq, Nov 23, SPA -- Masked gunmen on Tuesday assassinated a Sunni cleric north of Baghdad, police said _ the secondsuch killing in as many days. Sheik Ghalib Ali al-Zuhairi was a member of theAssociation of Muslim Scholars, an influential Sunniclerics group that has spoken out against nationwideelections to be held Jan. 30. Al_Zuhairi was shot as he was leaving Thiyaba Mosque inthe town of Muqdadiyah after dawn prayers, said Col. RaisanHussein. He was taken to Muqdadiya Hospital where he laterdied, Hussein said. Muqdadiyah is about 92 kilometers (57miles) north of Baghdad. A day earlier, unknown gunmen assassinated anotherprominent Sunni cleric in the northern city of Mosul _Sheik Faidh Mohamed Amin al-Faidhi, who was the brother ofthe group's spokesman.
