Samarra Samarra, Iraq, Oct 3, SPA -- U.S. and Iraqi forces scoured Samarra for holdouts on Sunday after two days of fierce fighting toreclaim control of the city from rebels. Overnight, U.S. warplanes hammered Fallujah, anotherrebel-held city, killing at least four people, hospitalofficials said. U.S. and Iraqi commanders have declared the operation inSamarra, 95 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Baghdad, asuccessful first step in a major push to wrest key parts ofthe country from insurgents before January elections. Iraqi police patrolled the city Sunday, while Americansoldiers and Iraqi National Guard members went house tohouse searching for insurgents and weapons caches. As the gunfire subsided, residents emerged from theirhomes to survey the damage and bury the dead.
