Colombo, Feb 25, SPA -- Sri Lanka's ruling alliance lostits majority in parliament Friday after a Tamil politicalparty withdrew its support, putting the country into astate of uncertainty as it grapples to recover from theAsian tsunami. The Ceylon Workers Congress, which has eight seats in the225-member legislature, said it was joining the oppositionbecause of unspecified disagreements with PresidentChandrika Kumaratunga's government. The move left theruling alliance with 111 seats. Though the loss weakens the government, it's unlikely tocause its downfall. However, the alliance could collapse ifits key partner, the Marxist People's Liberation Front, follows through on a threat it made Thursday to alsowithdraw because of a dispute over the peace process withTamil rebels. "We have resigned from the government," R. Yogarajan, asenior member of the Ceylon Workers Congress, told TheAssociated Press. He said the decision to quit was promptedby "the government's failure to implement certainagreements and programs."--SPA1232 Local Time 0932 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/242192
