Baghdad, Jan 18, SPA -- Iraq's interior minister warnedTuesday that if the country's Sunni Arab minority bows torebel threats and stays away from the polls on the Jan. 30election the nation could descend into civil war. Falah Hassan al-Naqib, who is himself a Sunni, toldreporters he expects Sunni insurgents to escalate attacksin the run-up to the election, especially in the Baghdadarea. Voters are to choose a new 275-member NationalAssembly. "If any group does not participate in the elections, itwill constitute treason," al-Naqib said. He added that"boycotting the elections will not produce a NationalAssembly that represents the Iraqi people." If that happens, he added, the Iraqi people "will enterinto a civil war that will divide the country."--SPA 1427 Local Time 1127 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/233451
