NATO secretary general suggests possible role in Darfur

London, Feb 3, SPA -- NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on Thursday suggested the alliance could play a supportingrole in the Sudanese region of Darfur, but stressed thatneither the African Union nor the United Nations had askedit to do so. De Hoop Scheffer, in Britain for a round of talks withBritish ministers, said NATO troops could help train AUforces in the vast western region, and provide logisticalsupport. Some 1,400 AU troops are monitoring a flimsycease-fire between Sudanese government forces and two rebelfactions.
