EU foreign policy chief, Germany condemn Sinai attacks

Berlin, Oct 8, SPA -- The European Union's foreign policy chief onFriday condemned the deadly bombing of resorts in Egypt'sSinai Peninsula, describing the attacks as "a tremendousblow." At least 22 people were killed in the attacks Thursdaynight on resorts popular with Israelis. "For me this has been a tremendous blow," EU foreignpolicy chief Javier Solana told reporters in Berlin. "It'ssomething that we want to condemn in a strong manner." He called for an end to a "spiral of violence" in theregion. German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer also condemned theattacks, adding that "those responsible for this crimemust be found and punished severely." His ministry advised Germans against traveling to theSinai Peninsula "until further notice." Speaking on the sidelines of a summit in Hanoi, Vietnam,Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said he was "stunned" by theattacks _ but stressed the need for continued efforts towork toward peace in the region.
