Muslim rebels promise to achieve peace with Philippine government

Cotabato, Philippines, Oct 30, SPA -- Muslim separatist rebels saidSaturday they are determined to peacefully resolve theirthree-decade rebellion in the southern Philippines. Mohaqher Iqbal, chief peace negotiator for the MoroIslamic Liberation Front, said rebel leaders assuredmembers of an international cease-fire monitoring groupthat they will pursue peace talks with the Philippinegovernment "until a just, comprehensive and honorablepeace settlement is achieved." The pledge was made during a meeting with Malaysian andBruneian cease-fire monitors inside a guerrilla camp. "Our leaders assured them the MILF is determined toachieve peace in Mindanao," rebel spokesman Eid Kabalutold reporters. "The meeting reinforced the foundation ofthe peace process in the region."
