Two car bombs rip through Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 4, SPA -- Two car bombs ripped through Baghdadstreets on Monday, with one blast killing at least 15people and wounding 81 at an entrance to the Green Zone,the seat of the U.S. Embassy and key Iraqi governmentoffices, officials said. In the first explosion, a four-wheel-drive vehicle packedwith explosives detonated outside the heavily fortifiedcomplex, Interior Ministry spokesman Col. AdnanAbdul-Rahman said. Yarmouk Hospital received 15 bodies and 81 wounded fromthe explosion, said Sabah Aboud, the facility's chiefregistration official. No coalition forces were believed hurt or killed in theblast, which happened shortly before 9 a.m. (0600 GMT) neara checkpoint at the western entrance to the Green Zone,said Maj. Phil Smith, a spokesman for the U.S. 1st CavalryDivision Troops cordoned off the scene and helicopters clattered overhead. The second car bomb exploded at 9:45 a.m. (0645 GMT), neara number of major hotels, Abdul-Rahman said. American andIraqi forces opened fire after the blast, but it was notimmediately clear what they were shooting at, witnessessaid. The car carrying the explosives was ripped in half withone part left dangling from a shop sign on the oppositeside of the street. At least five other cars were charred and a burned bodywas left sitting in one of them. Another man was thrownagainst a garage wall, his body crumpled in the street. Ahead and other body parts were strewn in the road amidshards of glass. Some of the injured, including a man with bloodiedbandages wrapped around his head, were helped into nearbyhotels. Others were rushed to surrounding hospitals. Smith said that no coalition forces were hurt in thesecond blast, either.
