TBILISI, Georgia, Aug 18, SPA -- Three Georgian peacekeepers were killed and seven others were wounded in overnight shooting in breakaway South Ossetia where daily clashes havecontinued despite attempts to reach a cease-fire, officialssaid Wednesday. Tensions in South Ossetia, which broke away from thecentral government in 1992 following an 18-month thatkilled hundreds, have escalated since the January electionof Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, who has pledgedto unite the country. Saakashvili on Tuesday appealed to world leaders to helpconvene an international conference on South Ossetia anddeploy Western peacekeepers in the region.
