MUWAQQAR, Jordan, Aug 12, SPA -- More than 600 Iraqipolice recruits completed an eight-week training course inJordan on Thursday, and prepared to go home to restore lawand order in their conflict-torn country. The 668 new police officers were the seventh batch ofIraqi police recruits that Jordan has trained since thebeginning of the year. Under an agreement signed with the then CoalitionProvisional Authority in Iraq, Jordan is committed to train32,000 Iraqi police officers within two years. So far about 4,000 police officers have completed theprogram at this desert camp in Muwaqqar, 35 kilometers (22miles) east of the capital Amman. The course includestraining in riot control, self-defense and driving. The instructors are police officers from Jordan, Canada,the United States, Britain, Sweden, Austria, Finland,Kosovo, the Philippines and New Zealand. Jordan is also training Iraqi soldiers at its ZarqaMilitary College, 27 kilometers (17 miles) northeast ofAmman. About 1,650 Iraqi soldiers, including 50 women, havegraduated from that program, which began in March under anagreement similar to the police training program. Thecourse includes fighting terrorists, riot control, andlectures on democracy and human rights.
