United Nations, Rabi'I 18, 1434, Jan 30, 2013, SPA - The Joint U.N. and Arab Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Al-Brahimi on Tuesday said the U.N. Security Council must “take action” on Syria which he said is being “destroyed.” Al-Brahimi said that the Geneva Communique agreed on in June last year provides “a lot of elements” for a “reasonable solution” to the 22-month crisis that the United Nations says has claimed at least 60,000 lives. He also said that “both sides (to the conflict) have started to say that if there is a political solution we will listen.” The Geneva Communique calls for a transitional government with full-executive powers. Al-Brahimi has said in the past that Bashar Al Assad cannot have a role in any transitional government. Al-Brahimi, who was speaking to reporters in New York after briefing the Council, also said that he was not resigning as envoy. “I’m not a quitter,” he said. “The moment I feel I am totally useless then I’ll resign.” --SPA 12:22 LOCAL TIME 09:22 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/1073512
