Beirut, Muharram 12, 1434, Nov 26, 2012, SPA - Opposing fighters in Syria said Monday they had taken over the northern Tishrin dam, following a week of heavy fighting with the regime's forces. The Britain-based Syrian observatory for Human Rights posted a video showing the opposing fighters surrounded with confiscated weapons at the dam, which is located on the Euphrates river, between the northern provinces of Aleppo and Raqa. They said controlling the dam would give them additional passage between the two provinces, according to a report of DPA. The dam is 40 metres high and has six water turbines producing electricity for Aleppo and other nearby areas. Elsewhere, activists said at least 14 people were killed as fighting continued, mostly in the outskirts of Damascus, as well as in the southern province of Daraa. Activists reported that Sunday's death toll had reached 100. --SPA 12:41 LOCAL TIME 09:41 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/1052544
