More than 50 per cent of the 18.3 million registered voters need to cast ballots for a valid referendum, after which a simple majority would decide the outcome. About 9 per cent of voters had cast their ballots by 10 am (0700 GMT), three hours into the vote. Voting would continue until 11 pm.
