Stockholm, Dhu-AlHijjah 4, 1435, Sep 28, 2014, SPASweden on Sunday marked with solemn memorial services the 20th anniversary of the loss of more than 800 lives aboard the Baltic Sea passenger ferry M/S Estonia. "The sinking was a disaster that sent a shock wave through the whole society," Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf said at an official commemoration, dpa reported. The vessel was en route from Tallinn, Estonia, to Stockholm when a storm ripped off the bow door. Of the 989 peole aboard ship, only 137 survived the September 28, 1994 ordeal. Sweden itself lost 501 nationals in what has been compared to a modern-day Titanic. The king said he felt "very humbled" when seeing all the names engraved on the monument that was erected on the island of Djurgarden, near the Stockholm waterfront. "We will never forget their names and fate," he added. The king then laid a wreath at the memorial. -- SPA 18:39 LOCAL TIME 15:39 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/1278753
